Charged after canceling a subscription? Check these details first.
A charge after cancellation does not always mean the provider ignored your request. The cancellation date, renewal cutoff, billing cycle, final period and refund terms can all affect what appears on the statement.
Review My Recurring Charges1. Find the cancellation confirmation
Start with the email, account message or screenshot that shows when cancellation was completed. Note the exact date, time, account email and any wording about when access or billing would end.
2. Compare the cancellation time with the renewal time
If cancellation happened after a renewal had already processed, the charge may belong to the next billing period even though the subscription is now canceled. Compare the transaction date with the provider's stated renewal date and cutoff.
3. Check whether cancellation ends billing immediately or at period end
Some subscriptions stop future renewals but leave access active until the paid period ends. Others terminate immediately. Read the cancellation confirmation and provider terms so you know which model applies.
4. Look for a final or prorated charge
A final transaction can represent a partial billing period, an add-on, tax, usage charge or another service tied to the same account. Compare the line item and amount with prior statements before assuming it is a duplicate renewal.
5. Check whether you canceled the correct account
Households sometimes have multiple email addresses, app-store subscriptions or duplicate accounts. Confirm that the charged account matches the account that received the cancellation confirmation.
6. Contact the provider with the evidence together
Keep the cancellation confirmation, the new charge, account identifier and provider response in one place. Ask the provider to explain what billing period the charge covers and whether a refund is available under its terms.
7. If the charge is unauthorized or the provider will not resolve it
If you believe the transaction is unauthorized or inconsistent with the cancellation terms, contact the card issuer or bank promptly and ask about its dispute process. Deadlines and rights depend on the payment method and circumstances, so do not delay.
